Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is the surgical altering of a female animal so that she is unable to reproduce. Neutering is the castration or altering of a male animal so it is unable to impregnate a female. Both may be performed as outpatient procedures and pets are generally returned to the owners the same day. Recovery for this procedure is about seven to ten days. During this period the pet should be limited in its activity and leash walked for about seven days. The female’s uterus is removed along with the ovaries in the procedure called spaying. Male animals testicles are removed through a small incision. Closure for the wound may be done with sutures, staples and/or surgical glue. The veterinary staff will remove any staples at the end of the recovery period. An
